A Regency Gilt Framed Dragon Convex Mirror

19th century
Description

A Regency period wood carved and gilt framed convex mirror, Early 19th C. With original flaming dragon pediment, leaf carved apron and gilt finish. The moulded circular ball decorated frame topped with a carved pediment decorated with a dragon between two upright lances and flanked below by flaming dragon's heads. Retaining the original convex mirror glass and gilding and the reverse with the original and untouched backing boards. The dragon motifs here are rather rare, eagles and dolphins being far more common on convex mirrors.

It measures 90cm (35½) high, 50cm (19½") wide, 21cm (8") deep.

A Regency convex mirror is a circular wall mirror originating from the early 19th century in Britain, characterised by its curved glass lens and gilded wooden frame. These mirrors were designed to disperse light throughout a room and offer a wide-angle reflection of the interior space.

Regency gilt mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber framing covered with layers of gesso and bole. The surface was finished with gold leaf using water gilding techniques, often accompanied by ebonised wooden reeded slips surrounding the convex plate glass.
