Large Regency Convex Mirror

19th century
Description

An excellent example of Regency carved gilt wood convex mirror by Thomas Fentham, with acanthus, foliate and scrolled pediment surmounted with eagle holding balls and chains in his beak, above a large round framed with an arrangement of balls and ebonised slip centred with the original lightly foxed convex mercury plate. With further acanthus carved below. Circa 1810. In good original condition including the water gilding and plate. Still bearing the manufacturers labels to the reverse.

Thomas Fentham is recoded as a carver, gilder, glass grinder from 1774-1825. A number of labelled examples of his mirrors survive and as such the name Fentham remains synonymous with the finest convex mirrors and had some notable commissions.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency convex mirrors are circular wall mirrors produced predominantly in early nineteenth-century Britain. They feature curved convex mirror glass designed to reflect light across an entire room, set within deep moulded giltwood frames decorated with ball spherules, an ebonised inner slip, and elaborate carved crestings such as eagles or foliage.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak frames covered in gesso and water-gilded with gold leaf. The inner sight edge features a turned, ebonised reeded wood slip, while the reflective surface consists of mercury-backed convex blown glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved timber elements, natural age wear to the gold leaf showing red or yellow clay bole beneath, dark oxidation spots or subtle distortion in the antique glass, and hand-cut pine backboards.

A Regency convex mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. The curved glass creates spatial depth and reflects ambient light, making it suitable for both classic period settings and minimalist modern rooms.

Clean giltwood using only a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush to prevent lifting fragile gold leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners on the gilded frame; clean the convex glass carefully with a dry or lightly dampened cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the gilding or slip.
