Regency Carved Giltwood Convex Wall Mirror

19th century
For Sale by Tinker & Toad
Description

A Fine Example of a Regency Carved Giltwood and Gesso Convex Wall Mirror. Rare to find of this quality in its original unrestored condition. The pediment surmounted with a finely carved eagle with lions mask below. Flanked by finely carved leaf decoration. The original mercury convex mirror circled with a reeded ebony slip. The lower section again having the most finely carved acanthus leaf detail. In good condition with wear commensurate to age. The mirror plate is beautifully foxed but useable and still reflects. The rear has two old trade labels, one for a Lewes removals company from the 1960's and what was probably the makers trade label. One of the nicest we have ever had and will make a perfect addition to your home or hospitality space.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised in early 19th-century Britain, Regency convex mirrors feature a outward-curving glass plate set within a deep circular giltwood frame. They were designed to distort light and reflect an entire room, often decorated with ball embellishments, ebonised slips, and dramatic crestings such as eagles.

These mirrors were constructed using carved wood or composition moulding over a timber core, finished with water gilding using thin gold leaf. The inner rim typically holds an ebonised or blackened reeded slip to frame the convex glass.

Authentic period examples generally exhibit hand-carved details, evidence of dark red or grey bole beneath worn gold leaf, and mercury or early silvered glass showing dark spots or oxidisation. The back of the frame usually displays hand-sawn timber backing boards with original iron fittings.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantel, sideboard, or architectural focal point to draw the eye. Its curved surface catches ambient light and creates a wide visual field, making it effective in foyers, dining rooms, and traditional drawing rooms.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry squirrel-hair brush, avoiding water, solvents, or commercial polishes which can strip water gilding. Clean the glass carefully with a dry microfibre cloth or lightly dampened swab, ensuring liquid does not seep behind the inner ebonised slip.
