An Attractive Mid 19th Century Early Victorian Period Giltwood And Gesso Circular Convex Mirror, Of Relatively Small Proportions, Having Very Well Carved Eagle On Rocks Bearing Chain And Swept Foliage Surmount To Top, Over Typical Circular Frame With Ribbon Carved And Applied Ball Decoration, Enclosing Replacement Mirror Plate.

A good example and very attractive victorian period giltwood convex mirror in the stereotypical design. It boasts great elegance and sophistication to its design and would really be a great feature on the wall in just about any room it finds itself.

It is also a little smaller than normal which is nice and helps to broaden the variety of spaces which it can be hung in. It is of course still large enough to have a bit of presence about it though.

Overall it remains in very good condition and the gilding has aged nicely, taking on an attractive bronze lustre over time. One would imagine that the mirror has hung in one place for a large part of its life as there are very few repairs, or significantly damaged areas to speak of.

There are of course various old marks, scuffs, scrapes and rubbed areas, all of which are commensurate with age and add to the overall character of the piece without detracting from it aesthetically in the slightest. We also believe that the mirror plate itself is a replacement due to the very good condition its in.

The original purpose of convex mirrors was to reflect and spread the light source into as many parts of a room as possible and this is turn can often make a room feel significantly bigger.

Convex mirrors became widely popular during the late Georgian and Regency periods in Britain. Beyond their decorative charm, the curved glass allowed butler and service staff to observe an entire dining room without standing directly inside the space.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved timber coated in gesso and finished with real gold leaf using water gilding techniques. The central glass plate was paired with an ebonised wooden reeded slip and fitted into a moulded frame often decorated with gilded spherules.

Authentic period examples display signs of genuine age, such as subtle distress or cracking to the gesso, gentle wear to the gold leaf showing underlying clay, and light foxing or distortion in the hand-cut convex glass plate.

A convex mirror functions effectively as an accent piece when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, in an entryway foyer, or centered within a gallery wall. Its curved glass catches light and visually expands smaller contemporary spaces.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which dissolve the water-soluble gesso base. Mirror glass should be cleaned by spraying glass cleaner sparingly onto a microfibre cloth rather than directly onto the glass.
