Technical Description

A very well-balanced and elegant light baluster wine glass dating to the reign of King George II, circa 1735. It features a bell bowl with fine Rococo engraving around the rim. The superb stem comprises an angular knop above a cushion knop, a teared inverted baluster, and a basal knop. Raised on a conical foot.

Historical Context

Light baluster glasses are a mid-18th century refinement of earlier heavier stems, with slimmer, more elegant proportions. Rococo engraving, popular at the same time, features flowing, asymmetrical designs such as scrolls and floral motifs. Together, they reflect the shift toward greater refinement and decoration in Georgian glass.
