Rare C19th Alpine Carved Oak Parlour Suite (7 Pieces)

19th century
Description

A rare and striking late-19th-century Alpine carved oak parlour suite, comprising four chairs, two stools and a matching table. This complete seven-piece set is a superb example of traditional chalet furniture from the French–Swiss Alpine region, where small artisan workshops produced sculptural folk-art pieces for mountain lodges and summer houses. Each seat and the table top are carved in radiating petal segments, giving the suite its distinctive botanical form — rustic, tactile and highly decorative. The tripod bases and waisted chair backs reflect the classic silhouette of Alpine chalet furniture, valued today for its warmth, charm and handcrafted individuality. The oak throughout has developed a rich, natural patina that enhances the sculptural carving. Complete, matched sets of this type — especially those retaining the original stools — are exceptionally scarce. The unified carving, cohesive form and strong visual presence make this a standout decorative ensemble with real interior-design appeal. Ideal for kitchens, garden rooms, chalets, cabins or any setting seeking a touch of Alpine character and authenticity.

Measurements

• Chairs: Height 78 cm; Seat Height 43.5 cm

• Stools: Height 43.5 cm; Width 43.5 cm

• Table: Height 65 cm; Width 60 cm

Dealer’s Note: Authentic late-19th-century Alpine chalet furniture in complete sets is increasingly difficult to source. The matched composition, distinctive petal-carved design and charming folk-art form place this suite firmly among the decorative Alpine pieces most sought after by collectors, stylists and chalet homeowners.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the mountainous regions of Central Europe during the nineteenth century, these suites were crafted as regional folk art, often featuring distinctive geometric patterns and nature-inspired motifs.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like oak, pine, or walnut, using hand-carved joinery, peg construction, and radiating petal or sunburst motifs on seating and table surfaces.

Authentic period examples exhibit signs of hand-tooling, natural timber shrinkage along the grain, authentic iron or wooden peg fixings, and aged patination within the recessed carvings.

A carved suite creates a striking focal point in a contemporary dining area or garden room when paired with minimalist backdrop tones and soft linen textiles to balance the dark timber.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically with a soft brush to clean dust from deep carved details without altering the original patina.
