A Cracking Waxed Original Victorian Pine Hungarian 3 Seater Box Settle / Bench

19th century
Description

This bench is in good condition. It has been professionally stripped and restored to a fantastic standard in Hungary. It has then been waxed in a lovely antique brown bri wax giving it a stunning patina.

This bench would look well in an old or modern property in any room for seating purposes. It would look great in a hallway etc or to the one side of a large table. It could comfortably seat 2/3 people.

The bench stands on square legs supporting the main section leading to beautifully shaped arms. There are turned columns to the ends aswell as the back rest. The backrest is flat and beautifully lined. There is a lift up lid with plenty of storage space beneath with storage compartments. You could have a cushion pad made in an upholstery of your choice.

Delivery Terms

WE OFFER FREE DELIVERY TO ENGLAND, WALES, AND SCOTLAND (BELOW PERTH)

Shipping /delivery is equally as important to us as the item of furniture itself. It is simple; we deliver everything personally in England / Wales so this way we are 100% sure that the item / furniture reaches our customers safe and sound. We NEVER use couriers. Delivery is generally within 7-14 days of purchase. We guarantee delivery anywhere in England / Wales within 21 days of purchase.

Deliveries to Scotland as far north as Perth are guaranteed within 6 weeks of purchase. If delivery is required above Perth in Scotland please contact James on 07957 392 074 or

james@davidhuntantiques.com for a price.

Deliveries are either carried out by David or James as one member of the team is required to stay in the warehouse, therefore we do require assistance from the van into your hallway with the item of furniture. We have set delivery days and once the van is loaded (a day prior to delivery) David will call customers to arrange a two hour delivery time slot. Customers will also receive a text when delivery is 30 minutes away.

It is really helpful if customers can provide their ‘what3words’ location to make delivery as smooth

as possible, especially properties in rural locations.

Ireland Deliveries

We do use a very good courier company called DVM Service to deliver goods to Ireland. We ask the customer to pay this company direct for the delivery charge and we then liaise with DVM regarding collection of a customer’s item of furniture to be shipped to Ireland.

Europe & Rest of the World

We do not ship to Europe or the Rest of the World.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A box settle is a traditional wooden bench featuring a high back, solid arms, and a hinged seat that opens to reveal an internal storage compartment. Popular across rural Europe during the nineteenth century, these pieces served dual functions as daily seating and practical storage.

These benches were typically crafted from solid pine using mortise and tenon joinery, with turned spindles along the backrest and arm supports. The lift-up seat rests on wooden hinges or cleats, protecting items stored within the enclosed box base.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, original iron or brass keyhole escutcheons, and visible saw marks on the interior or underside. Look for natural wear along the front edge of the seat and original waxed or painted finishes beneath later restorations.

Position the bench in an entryway or hallway as a functional boot bench, or place it along a dining table in a country kitchen. Pair it with neutral linen cushions or woven throws to complement the timber tones while maintaining clean, utilitarian lines.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and avoid placing the bench near direct heat sources or radiators to prevent shrinkage. Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and protect the surface finish.
