This Georgian mahogany nightstand dates from the eighteenth century. The piece has a rich brown colour with a good patina across the timber, complemented by brass hardware. The upper section features a shaped tray top gallery with pierced hand-hold cut-outs, above a single cupboard door with a brass axe-head handle and a shallow lower drawer fitted with a brass swan-neck handle. The cabinet stands on square chamfered legs with a shaped apron below the drawer. Practical dimensions measure 75 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item functions well as a bedside table or side cabinet in a bedroom, guest room, or living space to hold lamps, books, and personal items while adding traditional English country house character to the room.

A Georgian tray-top nightstand is an 18th-century furniture piece designed with a raised gallery rim around the top surface. Originally created as night commodes or washstands, these functional items often feature cut-out hand-holds, an enclosed cupboard, and pull-out drawers.

Georgian cabinetmakers primarily used solid mahogany and mahogany veneers due to the timbers durability, rich grain, and deep tone. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were typically used for drawer linings, while cast brass was used for handles and hinges.

Authentic Georgian pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn timber marks on back panels, and original brass hardware. Oxidation on secondary woods, natural wear to lower legs, and irregular hand-carved details are key indicators of age.

Place an antique mahogany nightstand alongside upholstered or metal bedframes to create textural contrast. These compact pieces also function well as occasional side tables in living rooms or entryways.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax every six to twelve months. Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking and excessive fading.
