Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror originally designed to hang on the wall space, or pier, between two windows in Regency-era interiors. Often featuring architectural elements such as cornices, pilasters, and painted glass panels, these mirrors served to reflect light into formal rooms.

Regency pier mirrors were typically constructed from carved pine or oak frames covered in gesso and water-gilded with gold leaf. Decorative elements often included reverse-painted glass panels, known as verre eglomise, twist-turned side columns, and silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces display characteristics such as hand-carved wood joinery on the reverse, signs of original glass silvering wear, and subtle red bole showing through the gilt layer. The backboards often consist of rough-hewn timber panels secured with antique hand-forged nails.

Position the mirror above a console table in a hallway or mount it in a narrow recess to maintain historical proportion. The warm gilding creates a strong focal point when set against contemporary dark paint schemes or neutral plaster.

Dust the gilded frame lightly with a soft, dry feather duster, avoiding liquids or chemical cleaners that can lift the thin gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass using a slightly dampened microfibre cloth, taking care not to let moisture seep into the frame edges or painted glass.
