A pier mirror, or pier glass, is a tall, vertical mirror originally designed to hang on the wall space between two windows, known as a pier. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were constructed to reflect light into darker areas of formal reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century pier mirrors typically featured carved timber frames covered in gesso and gold leaf gilding. Many incorporated reverse-painted glass panels, known as verre eglomise, alongside silvered or mercury-backed glass mirror plates.

Authentic 19th-century pier mirrors show signs of age such as fine craquelure in the gilded surface, dark spots or desilvering on the mirror glass, and hand-cut timber backing boards fastened with period fixings.

Position an antique gilt pier mirror above a contemporary sideboard, in a narrow hallway alcove, or between windows to maximise light distribution and introduce historical architecture into modern spaces.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry brush to avoid disturbing fragile gold leaf. Never use water, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents, as moisture dissolves the underlying water gilding and gesso.
