Rare Queen Anne Walnut Chest on Chest

18th century
For Sale by Holmes Antiques
Description

A rare early 18th Century Queen Anne Walnut Tallboy of beautiful faded colour, The piece is In very good original condition throughout. Having matched figured Walnut veneers, feather banding and double bead decoration to the framework. The superbly shaped cross grain cornice sits above a cushion drawer which is a rare early feature on such pieces. The matched veneers to the ends with cross grain banding to the front are particularly nice and have not suffered from shrinkage that often occurs in the groundwork. The feet are for the most part original with a few veneers patches at the base, they are typical of the Queen Anne Period having bold ogee shaping.

The chased brass handles and escutcheons are again typical of the period, the majority of them are original. This is a fine and very smart example with lovely clean original Oak Drawer linings.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is a piece of furniture consisting of two chests of drawers stacked vertically, designed in the late 17th and early 18th centuries to maximise vertical storage space.

These chests were typically constructed using solid oak or pine frames veneered with figured walnut, burr walnut, or fruitwood, fitted with brass backplate handles and hand-dovetailed drawer joints.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-sawn oak drawer linings, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, original iron lock plates, and natural wood shrinkage along veneer joints.

A walnut chest on chest functions as a focal point in a bedroom, hallway, or drawing room, pairing effectively with neutral wall finishes, contemporary art, and brass lighting accents.

Keep the chest away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer movement or fading, and clear the surface periodically using high-quality beeswax applied with a soft cloth.
