18th Century Walnut Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

An Attractive And Very Good Quality Mid 18th Century Walnut Chest, Retaining Good Colour Throughout, With Unusual Bold Wavy Moulded Edge To Top Over Four Long Drawers With Replacement Pierced Plate Brass Handles, Raised On Elegant Shaped Bracket Feet.

This extremely functional chest is a little quirky and that in itself adds a real charm to the piece. The wavy moulded edge almost has an anglo indian. or portugese feel to it from a stylistical perspective, although the rest of it is very much typically english 18th century.

It retains a good, warm colour throughout and although the handles are relatively modern replacements, they are very much in the style of the period this chest was made and look lovely on it. The shaped bracket feet appear to be a slightly different grain of timber to the rest of the chest and this leads us to believe they are also old replacements, but when viewing from underneath they look absolutely like they could be original. Maybe the cabinet maker just different have enough of the same type of wood left!

A good size, with fully operational drawers, locks and keys this is absolutely perfect for just about any modern day living purpose one can think, with the added bonus of being constructed from a particularly dense, hard wearing walnut which means that it is more than capable of taking a few knocks, bumbs and scrapes when in use.

As with all items we offer for sale this chest of drawers has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained professional antique furniture restorers, cumlinating in a natural wax polish, ensuring it is very much ready for immediate home use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The 18th century marked a prominent era for walnut cabinet making in Britain, defined by figured veneers, balanced proportions, hand-carved mouldings, and classical architectural profiles.

Chests from this period were crafted using solid native walnut or walnut veneers over pine or oak carcasses, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints and cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces display irregular hand-cut dovetails, shrinkage lines along solid timber panels, hand-planed backboards, and authentic oxidisation on internal iron and brass fittings.

Position the chest as a focal feature against contemporary neutral walls, pairing it with minimal contemporary ceramics, structural lighting, or artwork to balance historic timber tones.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax once or twice annually, ensuring the timber is kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
