Small Mahogany Side Table with Painted Decoration C.1900

Description

Pretty little Sheraton style side table with painted decoration c.1900. 19½" x 13½" top with shaped sides and a fine ebony and boxwood inlaid border. Retaining the original painted decoration of an elegantly dressed lady in a wide-brimmed hat surrounded by a border of pearls, scrolling acanthus and floral garlands. With a shallow apron and slim tapering legs, all with an inlaid stringing to the edges. Legs are joined with a butterfly shaped stretcher shelf with painted decoration of trailing ivy. Very good condition, presented as found. Original label to the underside for the house furnishers Coxeters of Abingdon.

This Edwardian side table dates from around 1900 and is in the Sheraton style, formed of warm brown mahogany with hand-painted decoration. The rectangular top has a shaped serpentine rim, an inlaid ebony and boxwood border, and a central painted portrait medallion of a woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat, encircled by a border of pearls, scrolling acanthus, and floral garlands. The shallow apron leads down to slim, tapering legs with inlaid stringing edges, connected by a butterfly-shaped lower tier shelf decorated with trailing ivy. Coxeters of Abingdon house furnishers provided the original label on the underside. The piece stands 71 cm high, 49.5 cm wide, and 34.5 cm deep. It works well in a modern interior as a side table positioned at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair to hold lamps, drinks, or small decorative items.
