A Highly Decorative Limed Backed Settle

19th century
Description

This is a Highly Decorative Back Settle (a high-back wooden bench, originally used in halls and kitchens) and can be used for a multiple of purposes.

“Constructed with 18thc coffer pieces”

The carved panels in the back—especially those arched, fan-shaped motifs—were almost certainly salvaged from an 18th-century coffer (chest). These are genuine period carvings reused later.

“With later pieces”

The seat, arms, legs, and probably the framing elements were added in the 19th or early 20th century, when it was fashionable to repurpose antique oak panels into “romantic” furniture.

“Limed”

The pale, chalky finish is a limed oak treatment, which highlights carving by settling white pigment into the grain. This finish is decorative and not original to the 18th century.

Decoration & construction

The heavy, symmetrical carving, panelled back, and architectural feel suggest it was made to look older and grander than a typical domestic settle—very much in line with Victorian or Edwardian antiquarian taste.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A settle is a traditional wooden bench, typically crafted with a high solid back and wooden armrests, designed historically in European homes to shelter sitters from draughts.

Traditional settles were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak or pine, featuring pegged mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative relief panels, and solid timber seating.

Authentic period settles exhibit signs of hand-planed timber surfaces, wooden peg construction rather than modern metallic fasteners, natural wear on seat surfaces, and accumulated patination within carved crevices.

Position a high-backed settle in a hallway or boot room as a focal architectural statement, complemented by simple linen cushions or a natural wool throw to balance the structured timber silhouette.

Maintain a limed timber finish by dusting regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and applying a clear, non-silicone wax sparingly to preserve the wood without altering the pale tone.
