Early 19th Century Limbach Porcelain Figure, Woman with Basket

18th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A large German porcelain figure produced at Limbach in Thuringia around 1825. The standing female figure rests her arms on a vertically formed basket, creating a balanced and decorative composition suited to interior display.

The figure holds a small needle case, an attribute associated with domestic needlework in early 19th-century genre figures. The basket features a moulded woven surface highlighted in blue, while the base is finished in naturalistic tones with applied scrollwork. Due to the complexity of manufacture, two firing holes are present to the underside for ventilation and pressure control during firing. A blue underglaze mark of the period is visible beneath.

An attractive early German porcelain figure of good scale and preservation.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced in Thuringia, Germany, Limbach porcelain figures are noted for their hard-paste ceramic construction, pastoral subject matter, and hand-painted overglaze enamel decoration.

These figurines were crafted using hard-paste porcelain clay fired at high temperatures, decorated with mineral-based enamel pigments, and finished with gilded accents.

Authentic pieces often feature factory marks such as a cloverleaf or crossed sticks, hand-applied floral details, faint mold seam lines, and slight surface wear on the unglazed base.

Display the figure on a mantelpiece, inside a glazed curio cabinet, or alongside art books on a shelving unit to add historic texture to a modern room scheme.

Dust the figure gently using a soft-bristled dry brush, avoiding water submersion or harsh chemical cleaners that may damage delicate overglaze enamel and gilding.
