Antique Karaja Rug

19th century
For Sale by Farnham Antique Carpets (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

A rich and fantastic tribal antique Karaja rug in wonderful original condition, circa 1890 and woven by an expert weaver over 130 years ago.  Woven with unbelievable natural dyes, the soft saffron yellow border, glorious rare green dyes in the eight-pointed star design, and natural ivory in the main sun-burst medallion.  Deep indigo blues and brick terracotta reds complete the stunning dye palette on this stunning late 19th century rug which is in excellent original condition.

Karaja rugs were woven in the North-West of Persia, not far from the weavers of the Caucasus, which is why we see animal motifs and geometric designs from antique Caucasian rugs.  Look for the lovely small Reindeer motifs shown four times around the central medallion.

Purchase this collectable antique rug online via our secure checkout and we can ship it securely to your home.  Or reserve and request a home visit to arrange a convenient day and time to view this antique Karaja rug in-situ.  We travel all over the UK showing our inventory of carpets and rugs to private customers and interior designers.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja rugs originate from the village of Karaja in Northwest Persia, situated near the Heriz weaving district. These textiles are recognised for their geometric tribal designs, typically featuring a distinct central medallion flanked by two contrasting geometric motifs along the central field.

Karaja rugs are hand-knotted using a hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. Natural plant and mineral dyes are traditionally employed to produce saturated shades of red, navy blue, ivory, and terracotta.

Authentic Karaja rugs generally feature three central medallions along the longitudinal axis, with the centre medallion differing in geometric structure from the outer two. They exhibit a coarse to medium Turkish knot and a dense wool pile with a firm structure.

A geometric Persian rug can be positioned on neutral wooden or concrete flooring to create high visual contrast against clean-lined contemporary furniture. Combining the deep crimson and indigo tones with simple upholstery grounds the room scheme.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to protect the hand-knotted pile from mechanical wear. Professional hand-washing by a specialist textile conservator is recommended every few years to remove settled dust and dirt.
