Antique Karaja Rug

19th century
Description

A very sweet and small tribal antique Karaja rug, full of charm and lovely natural colours, woven around 1890-1900.  A warm red border and indigo blues in the main field with rare pale green 8 pointed star medallions.  We love the small motifs in the main design, and scrolling vines coming out from the medallions in pale blue and off-whites.  The leaf design border is a wonderful accompaniment to the overall geometric pattern.  In fabulous condition an excellent little antique rug to brighten a home.

Karaja rugs were woven in the North-West of Persia, not far from the weavers of the Caucasus, which is why we see animal motifs and geometric designs from antique Caucasian rugs.  Look for the lovely small Reindeer motifs shown four times around the central medallion.

Purchase this small antique rug online via our secure checkout and we can ship it securely to your home.  Request a home visit to arrange a convenient day and time to view this antique Karaja rug in-situ.  We travel all over the UK showing our inventory of carpets and rugs to private customers and interior designers.

You are more than welcome to visit our barn showroom in Surrey to view this rug.  We are open Monday to Saturday 9.30-5.30pm by appointment.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja rugs originate from the Karadagh region in north-west Persia, near Heriz, and are recognised for their bold geometric medallions and tribal design elements.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool foundation, coloured with vegetable dyes.

Traditional Karaja designs feature a distinct central layout containing a diamond medallion flanked by square geometric stepped motifs, along with symmetrical hand-tied knots.

A geometric tribal rug anchors contemporary living spaces by providing visual weight against neutral floorboards and complementing solid wood furniture.

Vacuum regularly without a rotating brush head, rotate the piece periodically to equalise wear, and clean spills immediately using a clean, damp cloth.
