Antique Karaja Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Amazing rich natural colours on this circa 1890-1900 fine antique Karaja rug from northern Persia.  The border is a rich madder red with an abundance of greens and pale blue flowers and leaf design.  The two eight-pointed star design motifs in the main field are either side of a natural ivory wool latch-hook medallion, in beautiful condition with original ends and sides.  Professionally washed by ourselves and ready for the floor, supplied with our sturdy rug underlay.

Request a home visit below to arrange a convenient day and time to view this antique Karaja rug in-situ.  We travel all over the UK, from Scotland to London as well as visiting Europe showing our inventory to designers and customers.

Karaja carpets and rugs were woven in a village in the northeast of the Heriz region of Persia, not far from the Azerbaijan Border.  The rugs often use 8 pointed star motifs and sometimes they weave in animals and people which adds great interest. They are easily recognisable with three repeating medallions similar to those in caucasian rugs. The central motif has the latch-hooked design and the other two are eight-pointed stars.  This large carpet has more of a Heriz design and early Serapi colours mixing all three designs in many ways.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Woven in the village of Karaja in Northwest Persia, near the Heriz weaving district, these rugs are historically recognised by their distinct composition featuring three central geometric medallions set along a central vertical axis.

Traditional Karaja rugs feature a hand-knotted pile crafted from natural wool, spun onto a foundation of wool or cotton warps and wefts, coloured using plant-based vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces display a triple-medallion formattypically a central octagonal or diamond medallion flanked by two square latch-hook motifsalong with a palette dominated by rust red, navy blue, and soft turquoise.

Position the rug beneath solid neutral furniture, alongside natural timber or leather accents, allowing the bold geometric patterns and saturated tones to anchor the room.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting to avoid catching pile fibers, rotate annually to distribute foot traffic evenly, use an underlay pad, and arrange professional cleaning when required.
