Antique Bidjar Bag Face

19th century
Description

This is a beautiful antique Bidjar bag face, that has been carefully sewn onto a hessian wrapped wooden frame, which can be hung on a wall.  A really wonderful way to use these amazing antique bag faces as art for the wall.  The size of the frame is 65 cm high x 58 cm wide, and the size of the Bidjar bag is 49 cm high by 54 cm wide.

Woven by the nomadic weavers in Bidjar, Persia, these tribal bags would have originally been used as storage bags, and would have had a kilim backing which usually gets worn away from this wool piled front of the bag.  It is rare to find these tribal bag faces from Bidjar, as they generally produced rugs, carpets and runners, they did also produce wagireh which is the term for a sampler.  So they did weave smaller pieces, but unusual to find bag faces in good condition from the late 19th century.

Over 130 years old the dyes on these bags are still vibrant, being all natural dyes.  As the bag face has been carefully sewn onto the frame it can be removed at any point too.

Purchase this wonderful mounted antique Bidjar bag face via our secure checkout and we can safely wrap it and courier it to your home.  Or please book in a home visit or showroom visit to see this wonderful wall hanging up close.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Bidjar bag face is the hand-woven front panel of a traditional Persian storage pouch, or khorjin, crafted by Kurdish weavers in northwestern Iran. These durable textiles feature intricate geometric and floral motifs and were originally used for transport before becoming prized collectable textiles.

Bidjar textiles are traditionally hand-knotted using high-grade wool dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments on a cotton or wool foundation. They are famous for their heavy, double-weft construction and densely packed symmetrical knots, giving them remarkable structural strength.

Authentic antique Bidjar pieces are recognised by their exceptionally heavy, rigid feel and high knot density relative to other tribal textiles. They typically feature deep navy blues, rich madder reds, and precise stylized geometric patterns with natural colour variations known as abrash.

These small woven panels serve as versatile accents, frequently mounted as framed wall art, layered over larger neutral floor coverings, or converted into decorative cushion covers. Their rich tones and complex geometric patterns add texture and historical depth to modern spaces.

Vacuum gently without using a rotary beater brush, and address spills immediately by blotting with a clean damp cloth. For comprehensive cleaning, consult a specialist conservator who understands natural dyes and delicate antique fibres to prevent colour bleeding.
