Pair of Karaja Rugs

1900 - 1920
Description

A pair of very good Karaja rugs. These are perhaps the best quality Karaja pieces I have seen for a while with lovely soft wool and strong colours. They are of course not identical twins in design and also size, one is slightly bigger than the other but I believe they work better as a pair. The deep blue field frames the central diamond with lines extending out to a Heriz style ornament at each end picked out in white. The design within the central diamond is beautifully asymmetric, more so on one than the other. These are great rugs that would bear a lot of studying, they are also very beautiful pieces.

Very good although both have losses to the ends.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja rugs originate from the Northwest region of Iran, near the Heriz weaving district. They are celebrated for their bold geometric compositions, traditionally featuring a sequence of distinct central medallionsoften a diamond flanked by stylized square or star-like motifsset against indigo, red, or cream fields.

These textiles are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton or wool warp foundation. The rich colour palette is traditionally derived from natural plant dyes, including madder for terracottas and indigo for deep blues.

Authentic Karaja rugs feature a distinct combination of geometric latch-hook motifs, a central diamond medallion, and geometric border guards. Unlike finer city rugs, they display a coarser, durable weave with a double-string selvedge and slight asymmetry typical of village craftsmanship.

A geometric tribal rug introduces graphic texture and rich tone into minimalist or contemporary spaces. It pairs effectively with natural timber, neutral upholstery, and leather furniture to ground the room and create warmth.

Suction vacuum regularly on a low power setting without using a rotating brush bar. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean, dry cloth, and the rug should be rotated annually to ensure balanced wear from foot traffic and light exposure.
