Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian rosewood canterbury from around 1890 is a functional music rack designed for a gentleman's library or the end of a sofa. The piece is constructed from dark brown timber with a polished finish, measuring 46 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. The rectangular body is divided into four sections by tapering turned spindle supports, topped with a flat surface, and framed by a shaped apron along the base. The stand rests upon cabriole legs terminating in small brass castors. In the home today, this compact antique functions well beside seating to store periodicals, sheet music, or books. The design combines upright spindle detailing with curved cabriole supports, maintaining a traditional aesthetic suitable for period and eclectic interiors. The structure remains in excellent original condition, retaining its classic dark colour and functional mobility on brass castors.

FAQs

A Canterbury is a portable piece of furniture featuring vertical partitions, originally created in the late 18th century and widely produced through the 19th century to store sheet music, bound music volumes, or periodicals.

Authentic Victorian examples are typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, or mahogany, featuring hand-turned spindles, partitioned dividers, and brass castors attached to turned or cabriole legs.

Look for period-correct construction details including hand-turned spindles, natural grain patterns characteristic of rosewood, hand-cut joinery, and brass castors showing historic wear.

Position it adjacent to an armchair or sofa as a magazine stand, or utilise the top surface as a side table while housing oversized art books or vinyl records in the compartments below.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the timber is kept away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
