Afshar Rug

1920 - 1940
Description

A very decorative Afshar with an allover design of floral boteh on a rich red field. The boteh not only cover the field but also slip under the borders giving the impression that they continue outside of the frame of the rug. Note the left hand side of the main field where the weaver has inserted a number of random elements to fill the space. One might try and decode them into some sort of signature and you might imagine the weaver introducing similar elements in all of their pieces. These details make old rugs interesting, unique and beautiful.

Quite low in pile across the rug which does help articulate the design. The kelim ends are worn but still intact. Altogether quite a stiff and relatively strong piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Afshar rugs originate from the nomadic Afshar tribe primarily located in southeastern Iran. They are characterised by hand-knotted wool construction, geometric or stylized floral motifs, and a palette dominated by deep reds, navy blues, and ivory hues.

Traditional Afshar rugs are crafted using hand-spun wool for the pile, knotted onto either a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable and mineral dyes were historically employed to achieve saturated, durable colours.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted asymmetrical or symmetrical wool knots, flexible foundations, and slight variations in pattern symmetry typical of tribal hand-weaving. They often feature kilim flat-woven ends and multi-banded geometric borders.

A Persian Afshar rug serves as a foundational element to anchor seating areas or hallways. The geometric pattern and deep tones pair well with neutral upholstery, natural timber furniture, and contemporary leather accents.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush to prevent fibre damage. Blot liquid spills immediately with a clean dry cloth and consult a professional rug specialist for periodic deep cleaning.
