Antique Salar Khani Baluch Rug, Khorasan Region, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 4ft 11in x 2ft 6in (150 x 76cm).

Antique Salar Khani Baluch rug with turreted gul design.

Circa 1900.

A very good small Baluch rug, with a design of two rows of six large turreted guls similar in design to those found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. The minor guls are also similar to guls also found in Turkmen weaving, and are of note as they are woven in camel wool. The narrow main border is of interest being a linked star design, note how the lower end border is of the Baluch meandering vine design..

The rug is in good condition with even wear and medium pile, the blacks are corroded. There are some historic losses and wear to the ends and side bindings, this is reflected in the price.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Salar Khani Baluch rugs originate from the Khorasan region of northeast Persia and are woven by nomadic Baluch tribes, characterised by repeating octagonal geometric medallions, dark palette tones, and wool construction.

Antique Baluch rugs were traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp, dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments to produce deep red, indigo, and dark brown shades.

Authentic pieces exhibit asymmetrical knotting, subtle variations in dye shading known as abrash, soft flexible handles, and geometric border motives unique to nomadic weaving groups.

Position the rug as a grounding focal point beneath neutral furniture, within an entry hall, or in a study to introduce warmth, historic character, and dark geometric contrast.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beat bar, rotate periodically to balance traffic wear, and arrange professional dry cleaning by a specialist rug conservator when necessary.
