Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced predominantly in the Netherlands and Britain during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is recognised for its opaque white background created by tin oxide in the glaze, typically painted with cobalt blue motifs inspired by imported Chinese porcelain.

These chargers were formed from local clay to create a buff earthenware body, which was fired before being dipped in a lead glaze suspension containing tin oxide. The decorative designs were applied by hand directly onto the unfired tin glaze using metal oxides, primarily cobalt blue, before a final firing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic flaking or fritting along the edges where the brittle tin glaze has chipped away from the earthenware body. Additionally, look for hand-painted variation in the brushwork, pinholes or crawling in the glaze, and an unglazed or roughly glazed reverse side with visible stilt marks.
