Description

An Early 18th Century Delft Dish.

With a scallop edged rim, decorated with an outer band of spreading flowers, between a hatched ground. The inner band, a series of flower filled reserves rising toward the rim, and surrounding the circular centre, decorated with an extravagant bush in full bloom, rising to clouds above. The rear with a banded rim, small foot rim and makers mark for Adriaan Kocx.

Date circa 1700.

Height 1 1/2 inches, 4cm.

Diameter 10 1/4 inches, 26cm.

Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware manufactured in and around Delft in the Netherlands from the late 16th century onwards, created as a European alternative to imported Chinese porcelain.

These pieces were formed from low-fired earthenware clay, covered in an opaque white tin glaze, and painted by hand with metallic mineral oxides such as cobalt before undergoing a second firing.
