British delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in Britain from the late sixteenth century through the late eighteenth century, predominantly in centres such as London, Bristol, and Liverpool. Influenced by Dutch and Chinese ceramics, these items feature an opaque white glaze painted with cobalt blue oxide motifs.

These chargers were hand-thrown using local clay mixtures, fired once into biscuit earthenware, dipped into a lead-tin oxide liquid glaze, and then hand-painted with mineral pigments before a final high-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic glaze flaking or fritting along the rim due to the soft clay body, pinhole imperfections in the glaze, a slightly bluish-pink glaze tint, and a visible unglazed foot rim.
