For sale, a fine example of “The Beemaster” blue and white plate, possibly by William Adam, and dating circa 1820. The scene is based on the watercolour “Swarm of Bees, Autumn” by George Robertson (1742-1788). The plate is in fine bright undamaged and unrestored condition, free from chips cracks, or hairlines, although there is the normal glaze crazing common throughout these types of wares. Size diameter 24.6cm wide and 2.3cm tall. It will be difficult to find a better example. Price £175.00 inclusive of shipping to within the UK.

An identical example is shown in colour on the front cover The Dictionary of Blue & White Printed Pottery 1780-1880 by A.W. Coysh & R.K. Henrywood. Also see page 38 of the same volume.

Transferware is earthenware or porcelain decorated using a copper-plate printing process where pigments are transferred onto the ceramic body before glazing, a technique widely popularised in Britain during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Early 19th-century transferware was typically made from earthenware or pearlware coated in a clear lead glaze, with underglaze cobalt blue mineral pigments applied via tissue paper prints.

Authentic Georgian pieces often feature cobalt blue underglaze decoration, slight print alignment overlaps, hand-turned base rims, light crazing within the glaze, and characteristic period motifs such as pastoral or topographical scenes.
