A pair of pretty late 18th century Dutch delft plates, beautifully decorated with a central floral design and floral border. Both plates have a mark/signature on the rear.

Condition: One plate has a couple of small chips to the rim, the other has a much larger chip and a couple of smaller ones.

Delftware emerged in the seventeenth century in the Netherlands as European potters sought to imitate imported Chinese Kraak porcelain. Using a tin glaze over red clay bodies and hand painting cobalt blue motifs, manufacturers in Delft created accessible luxury ceramics that spread rapidly across Britain and Europe.

Traditional Delftware is crafted from buff or red earthenware clay coated in an opaque white glaze containing tin oxide. Cobalt oxide pigment was painted onto the unburnt glaze prior to firing, creating the characteristic deep blue decoration.

Authentic period Delftware exhibits a soft earthenware body often visible where the glaze has chipped at the rim, known as fritting. The underside frequently features a reddish clay tint, irregular hand-turned marks, visible glaze pinholes, and subtle variations in the hand-painted blue cobalt decoration.
