Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware ceramics produced predominantly in the Netherlands during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These pieces were created to replicate the appearance of imported Chinese blue and white porcelain using local clay and cobalt decoration.

Tin-glazed earthenware was fired once to create a bisque body before being dipped in an opaque white lead glaze containing tin oxide. Motifs were painted by hand directly onto the wet unfired glaze using metallic oxides like cobalt blue prior to a final firing.

Authentic pieces feature a reddish or buff earthenware body beneath the white glaze, which often displays pinholes, rim chipping, or glaze loss exposing the soft pottery beneath. Hand-painted brushwork exhibits subtle variations, and the underside typically shows stilt marks from kiln firing.

Blue and white Delftware can be displayed using plate stands on sideboards, arranged in symmetry inside glass-fronted cabinets, or mounted in grouped wall displays to provide historic texture within modern or classic rooms.

Tin-glazed earthenware should be kept away from moisture and cleaned gently using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth. Due to the porous nature of earthenware and fragile glaze edges, immersion in water or chemical detergents should be avoided.
