Delftware is tin-glazed earthenware produced predominantly in Delft, the Netherlands. Originating in the seventeenth century, these ceramics were developed to emulate Chinese porcelain using locally sourced clay covered in an opaque white glaze decorated with cobalt oxide.

Delftware is made from an earthenware clay body fired at lower temperatures. It is coated with a lead glaze containing tin oxide to produce an opaque white surface, which is then hand-painted with metallic oxides such as cobalt blue before a final firing.

Authentic pieces feature an earthenware body visible where glaze has flaked, often along the rim, known as fritting. Hand-painted cobalt decoration shows subtle brushwork variations, and the glaze typically exhibits fine crazing or slight pitting consistent with period firing techniques.
