Brief Description:

This is a fabulous early 18th-century English Delft Polychrome Chinoiserie Charger Plate.

Dating to circa 1730-1740, and probably from Liverpool.

The vibrant piece is decorated rim-to-rim in manganese outline with blue, yellow, green and orange colours, with a scene of a Chinese man seated in a garden with foliage and a fence.

Towards the bottom of the rim is an adorable little squirrel running across the faux grass.

English Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in England, primarily during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Influenced by Dutch and Chinese imports, these pieces feature hand-painted motifs on an opaque lead-tin glaze ground.

These chargers were formed from buff or red earthenware clay and coated in a tin oxide glaze to create an opaque white base. Artisans painted designs using metallic oxides such as cobalt, iron, manganese, and copper directly onto the dry, unfired glaze before a single high-temperature kiln firing.
