This unusual nineteenth-century cylindrical pot cupboard stand dates from circa 1840. The piece takes an English country house style with a painted wooden body finished in ochre yellow with a faux-marble decoration that recreates the appearance of Sienna marble, paired with an inset white circular marble top, a single curved door fitted with a small brass knob, two visible brass hinges on the right side, and a stepped circular plinth base. Measuring 70 cm high, 39.5 cm wide, and 39.5 cm deep, the stand functions as a compact side table or display pedestal. Positioned in an empty corner of a living room, hallway, or bedroom, the stand holds a small lamp, decorative bowl, or plant while offering enclosed storage within its curved cupboard space. The compact footprint makes it practical for narrow spaces or tight architectural corners where traditional square furniture does not fit. The neutral tones of the marble and painted finish complement both traditional period interiors and modern minimalist settings as a functional accent piece.

A cylinder pot cupboard is a 19th-century cylindrical storage cabinet designed to sit beside a bed. Originally built to hold night-time ceramic chamber pots, these pieces feature round column bodies, single curved doors, and flat top surfaces often fitted with marble.

These cupboards were typically constructed from pine or mahogany timber bases, finished with hand-painted trompe loeil paint effects to imitate marble veining. Tops were frequently inset with solid polished marble slabs to protect the wood finish from liquid damage.

Authentic pieces from around 1840 exhibit hand-painted decorative finishes with genuine surface craquelure, hand-cut joinery, original brass or turned timber knobs, and natural timber shrinkage along the circular base and moulding seams.

In contemporary interiors, a cylinder cupboard functions effectively as a compact bedside nightstand, an occasional drinks table beside a armchair, or a decorative plant pedestal in a alcove or hallway corner.

Dust the painted surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvent-based polishes, or excessive moisture, which can dissolve hand-painted scagliola or trompe loeil glaze finishes, and wipe spills off the marble top immediately.
