FAQs

Art Deco Chinese carpets produced in the early to mid-20th century typically feature bold asymmetrical compositions, heavily carved pile, and a fusion of traditional Chinese iconography with Western modernist colour palettes.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using high-grade hand-spun wool on cotton foundations, often employing a thick, plush pile that is hand-carved around the floral or geometric motifs to create a three-dimensional relief effect.

Authenticity is determined by examining the density of the hand-knotting, the characteristic chemical or natural dyes of the period, the presence of traditional asymmetrical weaving techniques, and specific design signatures or structural traits typical of workshops in Tientsin.

An antique oriental carpet works effectively as a focal point in a neutral living space, pairing well with clean-lined modern upholstery, architectural lighting, and minimalist furniture that allows the intricate floor covering to stand out.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialist cleaning every few years, avoiding direct prolonged sunlight to prevent dye fade, and using a breathable non-slip underlay to protect the foundation.
