19th century
Description

Antique French Ormolu and Sèvres Porcelain Clock

~ French - Circa 1850 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A fine and early ormolu clock of Louis XV design, beautifully made in superb mercury fire gilded Bronze Doré. The large porcelain enamel dial is mounted in a fluted drum, with scroll supports upon a serpentine shaped white Carrera marble base with ormolu feet. To the front is an exquisite Sèvres style porcelain panel depicting cupid with an arrow with a Bleu Celeste ground.

The dial is signed for the prestigious retailer Martin Baskett & Martin of Cheltenham. It is complete with its original finely fretted gilt hands and convex glass. The rear bezel is also glazed with convex glass to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of high quality and is signed to the back plate for Martin Baskett & Martin. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link or paste the following into to your browser: https://www.facebook.com/DragonAntiques/videos/1062505095305746

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with just some wear to the high spots and to the rear where less gold was applied. The dial is also in excellent condition, some slight hairlines and wear. Porcelain is also excellent, the overglaze gilt decoration is very good. The marble has a good polish, there is a small repair to the rear left corner.

Martin Baskett & Martin is listed in Loomes, Watch and Clockmakers of the World as working between 1840 and 1856 in Cheltenham. Well known for importing fine French clocks, this prestigious retailer was started in 1806 and received the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1838. In 1890 the company was renamed Martin & Co going on to create the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1935. The firm is still going to day in Cheltenham.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French ormolu clocks are distinguished by cast bronze mounts finished with a gilt technique known as ormolu, frequently incorporating hand-painted porcelain panels or marble bases. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these timepieces served as functional horological instruments and decorative statements in grand interiors.

These timepieces typically feature mercury-gilded bronze (ormolu), white enamel dials, hand-painted Sevres-style porcelain plaques, and white or black marble bases. The internal mechanical movements were cast in brass with steel pinions.

Authentic French ormolu clocks feature heavy, hand-chased gilded bronze mounts rather than lightweight stamped brass, often marked with maker stamps or serial numbers on the back movement plate. Dials are frequently signed with Paris makers, and porcelain inserts display hand-rendered detail.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, marble console, or dark wood sideboard to create a focal point. Paired with minimalist modern artwork or simple glass vases, the gilded metalwork provides a striking stylistic contrast.

Dust the metalwork gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or chemical cleaners that strip the original gilded layer. Mechanical clockworks should be professionally inspected and lubricated by a qualified horologist every three to five years.
