The dial is signed for the prestigious retailer Martin Baskett & Martin of Cheltenham. It is complete with its original finely fretted gilt hands and convex glass. The rear bezel is also glazed with convex glass to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of high quality and is signed to the back plate for Martin Baskett & Martin. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with just some wear to the high spots and to the rear where less gold was applied. The dial is also in excellent condition, some slight hairlines and wear. Porcelain is also excellent, the overglaze gilt decoration is very good. The marble has a good polish, there is a small repair to the rear left corner.

Martin Baskett & Martin is listed in Loomes, Watch and Clockmakers of the World as working between 1840 and 1856 in Cheltenham. Well known for importing fine French clocks, this prestigious retailer was started in 1806 and received the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1838. In 1890 the company was renamed Martin & Co going on to create the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1935. The firm is still going to day in Cheltenham.
