A girandole mirror is a decorative wall mirror fitted with attached candle branches or sconces at the base. Originating in the eighteenth century, these mirrors were engineered to amplify candlelight throughout room interiors.

Traditional construction involves carved timber substrates covered with layers of gesso, which are subsequently coated with gold leaf gilding. The mirror plate historically utilised silvered glass, while candle nozzles were crafted from cast brass or bronze.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, natural wear to the gesso revealing underlying red or grey clay bole, and dark oxidation spots on original glass plates. Unpolished timber backboards with period hand-forged fixings also indicate historical age.

Position the mirrors symmetrically on either side of an entrance, window, or above a sideboard to balance architectural proportions. The gilded finish provides warm contrast when set against dark painted walls or structured contemporary furniture.

Dust gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking fragile gold leaf. Never apply liquid glass cleaners directly to the frame or edges, as moisture can dissolve historic gesso and ruin silvering on the glass back.
