Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Girandole mirrors originated in 17th-century France and gained widespread popularity across Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Designed to combine a reflective mirror plate with attached candle branches, they served the dual purpose of illuminating dark interiors and maximizing the warmth of candlelight.

Traditional mirror sconces were constructed using cast brass, bronze, or iron frames that were treated with fire-gilding or gold leaf finishes. The mirror plates were historically backed with mercury or silvering, while decorative accents often featured cold-painted enamel details.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-finished casting lines, natural oxidisation on the reverse metalwork, and uneven wear to the gilt layer where handling occurred. Look for period-appropriate sconce nozzles, threaded component assembly, and light foxing or grey spotting on the original glass plate.

Positioning a symmetrical pair on either side of a central focal point, such as above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or doorway, creates visual balance. The metallic gold finish contrasts effectively against dark painted walls, textured plaster, or traditional panelling.

Dust the metalwork gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid lifting delicate leaf or gilt surfaces. Never apply liquid chemical cleansers or water to gilded metal, and clean the glass mirror plate using a lightly dampened microfibre cloth applied with extreme care near the frame edges.
