Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gilt overmantel mirrors became prominent decorative features during the 19th century, designed to sit above fireplace hearths to reflect candlelight and accentuate room proportions. Influenced by Rococo Revival and Baroque styles, these frames feature ornate foliate carvings and openwork detailing created using traditional gilding techniques.

Traditional 19th-century frames were constructed from carved timber, often pine or lime, coated with layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and binder. Thin sheets of gold leaf were applied over the gesso using oil or water gilding techniques, accompanied by silvered glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors feature subtle foxing or dark spotting on the mirror glass plate, evidence of age-related oxidisation of the metallic backing. The frame will often show fine hairline cracking in the gesso, gentle wear to the gold leaf revealing red or grey clay bole beneath, and hand-cut wooden backboards.

Positioning a gilded overmantel mirror above a contemporary or period fireplace creates a focal point that enhances architectural height. The detailed frame provides visual contrast when set against modern neutral walls, moody dark paint schemes, or minimalist furnishings.

Dust the ornate carved frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid water, damp cloths, and chemical cleaners, as moisture can dissolve historic gesso and lift delicate gold leafing; apply glass cleaner sparingly strictly to a cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass.
