Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These mirrors feature wooden frames coated in gesso, a mixture of plaster and glue, which was moulded into relief designs before being covered in thin gold leaf. The inclusion of sand moulding provided a textured background contrasting with burnished gilt surfaces.

Craftspeople carved a timber base, applied multiple layers of gesso plaster, and scattered fine sand onto designated areas to create texture. Water or oil gilding was then applied over the surface, with raised sections burnished for added depth.

Authentic period pieces display fine micro-cracking known as craquelure in the gesso, red clay bole showing through worn areas of gold leaf, and historical backing boards with hand-carved joinery.

Position the mirror as a central focal point above a simple mantelpiece or modern sideboard to create visual contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary architectural lines.

Dust the ornate relief details gently using a soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, solvents, or commercial cleaners that can dissolve water-gilded gesso and damage the original finish.
