Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century gilt overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, typically featuring an arched or rectangular top, a wide baseline, and a timber frame coated in gesso and gold leaf detailing.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or oak sub-frames topped with moulded gesso, hand-carved wood details, layered water gilding or oil gilding, and thick mercury or silvered glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit signs of age such as gentle wear to the gold leaf revealing red or yellow bole beneath, dark spots or foxing on the glass plate, and hand-cut timber backboards.

Positioning an antique gilt mirror above a clean-lined modern fireplace or atop a modern console table creates visual balance, drawing the eye upwards while reflecting ambient light throughout the room.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or liquid polishes, which can dissolve the gesso substrate and strip the delicate gold leaf.
