Antique Oak and Elm Book Press Table

18th century
Description

A charming book or linen press dating from the early 19th Century. The press itself has a wooden winding handle and large wooden screw. It is mounted to a table base with one drawer with turned wooden knobs and it stands on simple square tapering legs.

It is very well made and in good original condition with a lovely patina. There are general signs of age and use, some marks and light knocks but no major damages. There are two small burn marks in the support above the press where presumably a candle has been left for too long but it isn't detrimental and this has all helped to develop a beautiful patina. The press itself moves up and down smoothly and the whole piece is strong and sturdy. It has been given a clean and a wax and is ready for the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A book press table is a piece of functional trade furniture featuring a central threaded screw mechanism designed to apply even pressure to freshly bound books or paper sheets.

These pieces were typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak, elm, or beech, which could withstand the physical mechanical tension generated by the threaded screw apparatus.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut wooden thread screws, hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, and natural wear or polish build-up around the handle and pressing boards.

It can be styled as a singular sculptural accent piece in a study, hallway, or reading nook, functioning as a plant stand, side table, or display unit.

Keep the timber lightly waxed with a natural beeswax polish to prevent drying, and avoid applying heavy oil directly to the wooden thread mechanism to prevent dust accumulation.
