French 19th Century Gilt Rectangular Wall Mirror

19th century
Description

An Extremely Attractive Mid 19th Century French Louis Philippe Period, Rectangular Giltwood And Gesso Overmantle Mirror, Of Good Proportions Having Elegant Arched Top To Well Carved Cushion Frame Enclosing Original Rectangular Mirror Plate.

A very good quality and attractive 19th century wall mirror which has both elegance and presence at the same time. The frame is well carved and detailed without being overly fussy, resulting in a look which could be utilised in a wide variety of different settings and schemes.

The mirror is also a good size, big enough to be noticed, but not so big that it is totally dominant, which in combination with the elegant arched top adds to the myriad of different places this mirror could be hung.

Overall the condition is good, with just the expected old marks, scuffs and repairs for a mirror of this age, but certainly nothing visually displeasing or unpleasant in that respect. Also the attractive bevelled mirror plate is almost certainly original but remains in very good condition.

As with all items which we offer for sale this 19th century gilt mirror has been inspected at our workshops by our highly skilled, well trained antique furniture restorers to ensure it is in the absolute best possible condition before being placed on sale.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century French gilt mirror typically features a wooden frame coated with gesso, detailed with ornate carvings or mouldings, and finished with real gold leaf gilding. Common styles from this era, such as Louis Philippe, often exhibit rectangular silhouettes with softly rounded upper corners and classical motif detailing.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved woodoften pine or lime layered with gesso, a plaster-like compound used to build detailed relief mouldings. Water or oil gilding techniques were then applied using fine gold leaf, enclosing silvered sheet glass.

Authentic period pieces often show light wear or red bole clay showing through areas where the gold leaf has thinned. The glass may display subtle mercury silvering foxing, and the reverse side typically features original timber backing boards secured with square-cut iron nails.

Positioning a gilt mirror above a clean-lined fireplace mantel or minimalist console table creates a striking focal point. The warm metallic tones complement contemporary neutral palettes while adding historical texture and reflecting natural light across the room.

Dust the giltwood frame gently with a soft dry feather duster or brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solutions that can dissolve historic gesso and gilding. Clean the mirror glass carefully using a soft cloth dampened slightly with water, ensuring liquid does not seep into the frame borders.
