Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical overmantel mirrors emerged in the late 18th century, drawing inspiration from classical Greek and Roman motifs such as ribbon knots, acanthus leaves, and symmetrical framing. Designed specifically to sit above fireplace hearths, these mirrors served to reflect candlelight and enhance the light within grand reception spaces.

Historically, frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, then coated with layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and glue size. The intricate decorative elements were sculpted in plaster or composition moulding before gold leaf was applied using water-gilding or oil-gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit signs of natural age, including slight shrinkage cracks in the gesso, subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing red or yellow clay bole underneath, and minor oxidisation or foxing to the original mirror glass plate.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace mantle or a dining room console table to create a focal point. Combining classical gilded frames with contemporary neutral walls or bold dark paint tones highlights the architectural silhouette of the frame.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster. Water and chemical cleaning solvents must never be applied to gilded surfaces, as moisture dissolves water-gilding and damages delicate gesso ornament.
