Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative mirror designed to sit or hang above a fireplace hearth, serving as a key focal point in Victorian reception rooms. During the nineteenth century, these mirrors were produced in various shapes, including oval and rectangular frames, often decorated with ornate cresting and gilded composition ornament.

Victorian giltwood mirrors were typically constructed from carved softwood frames layered with gesso, plaster, or composition mouldings. The surface was then finished with gold leaf applied using oil or water gilding techniques, framing flat or bevelled plate glass.

Authentic antique giltwood mirrors often show natural signs of age, such as subtle cracking termed craquelure in the gesso, gentle wear revealing the red or grey clay bole beneath the gilding, and minor desilvering on the glass. Additionally, the backboards usually feature hand-sawn timber secured with oxidised fasteners.

A Victorian giltwood mirror can be positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or a contemporary sideboard to create visual contrast against neutral or dark paint schemes. Pairing gilded frames with clean-lined modern furniture highlights historic craftsmanship while maintaining a balanced aesthetic.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths which can dissolve water-soluble gesso and gilding. Glass cleaner should be applied directly onto a cloth rather than sprayed on the glass to prevent liquid from seeping into the frame structure.
