High Victorian giltwood design is characterised by deep naturalistic carving, floral motifs, and bold sculptural frames coated in gold leaf over gesso, which were prominent during the mid-to-late nineteenth century.

These frames were carved from timber, coated with a plaster-like gesso substrate, layer-painted with coloured clay bole, and finished with thin hand-applied sheets of gold leaf.
