We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 18th-century giltwood mirrors from the Baroque and Queen Anne periods featured hand-carved wooden frames coated in gesso and gilded using traditional water-gilding techniques. These frames typically displayed stylized foliate motifs, scrollwork, and egg-and-dart moulding.

Artisans constructed these mirror frames using hand-carved timber such as pine or lime wood, which was then sealed with gesso plaster and finished with thin leaves of genuine gold. The glass plates were historically hand-blown mercury glass, which naturally darkens and patinates over centuries.

Authentic pieces show evidence of hand-carving marks on the reverse side, micro-cracking in the gesso surface (craquelure), and red or grey clay bole peeking through worn gold leaf. Later reproductions frequently utilize cast plaster mouldings or modern chemical gilding rather than carved wood.

An antique giltwood oval mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, modern console table, or dining room sideboard. Positioning the intricate carved frame against neutral or deeply painted walls highlights the textural richness of the gilded timber.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry artists brush or feather duster to clear debris without snagging intricate carving. Water and liquid cleaning solutions must never be applied to water-gilded surfaces, as moisture will dissolve the underlying gesso layer.
