Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Antique French gilt oval mirrors typically feature Neoclassical and Louis XVI design elements, including elaborate top crestings, carved acanthus foliage, and delicate bead moulding. Popular throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these mirrors were crafted to reflect light across reception rooms while displaying detailed gold-leaf artistry.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved timber frames prepared with layers of gesso, over which thin sheets of gold leaf were applied via water or oil gilding. The reflective surfaces frequently used tin-mercury amalgams on glass, creating a characteristic tonal depth and subtle surface patination.

Authentic period mirrors usually exhibit dark spotting, faint foxing, and a soft reflection characteristic of historic mercury backings. Inspecting the back of the frame often reveals hand-hewn wood panels, while natural wear on the gilded surface frequently exposes red or grey bole clay beneath the gold leaf.

Positioning an antique gilt mirror above a fireplace mantel, hallway console, or vanity table creates an engaging focal point. Juxtaposing the textured gold-leaf frame against clean architectural lines and neutral modern walls prevents the piece from looking overly traditional.

Dust the giltwood frame using a dry, soft bristle brush, avoiding water or chemical polishes that strip gold leaf and gesso. Clean the mirror glass sparingly with a slightly dampened microfibre cloth, ensuring moisture does not migrate behind the frame edges into the backing.
