Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors are defined by timber frames coated in a layer of gesso, which is meticulously carved or moulded before applying thin gold leaf. These designs often feature classical motifs, floral scrollwork, or egg-and-dart border mouldings typical of the Victorian and Regency eras.

Traditional frames were constructed using solid softwoods such as pine or lime, topped with layers of chalk-based gesso and clay bole. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied via water gilding or oil gilding techniques over the moulded detail.

Authentic period pieces often show subtle red or grey clay bole showing through worn areas of the gold leaf, known as rub-through. Additional indicators include hand-cut timber backboards, small air bubbles or slight distortion in original mirror glass, and natural oxidisation spots.
