Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian overmantel mirror is a large decorative wall mirror designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth or chimney piece, originating in nineteenth-century Britain. These mirrors frequently featured arched tops, gilded frames, and ornate cresting to reflect light and enhance room proportions.

Victorian gilt mirrors were typically constructed from a carved timber core layered with moulded gesso decorative elements. Thin sheets of genuine gold leaf were then applied over the gesso, often burnished to achieve a reflective finish.

Authentic Victorian gilt mirrors usually display signs of age such as slight foxing on the glass silvering and minor wear to the gold leaf revealing the reddish bole or white gesso beneath. The backboard construction often consists of tongue-and-groove pine boards with historic fixings rather than modern plywood.

Positioning a Victorian gilt mirror above a period fireplace, marble console, or modern sideboard creates a distinct focal point in living or dining areas. Combining the ornate gilded arch with minimalist or contemporary furniture provides a contrast in texture and era.

Avoid using water or liquid household cleaners on gilded surfaces, as moisture can dissolve traditional gesso and lift gold leaf. Dust the frame with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, and clean the glass mirror plate using a sparingly applied glass cleaner on a cloth.
