Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a substantial decorative wall mirror designed to hang directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popular throughout the 19th century, these mirrors feature gilded wood or gesso frames created to reflect light and enhance the visual scale of reception rooms.

Frames from this period were typically constructed from carved timber, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and adorned with moulded composition ornaments. Gold leaf was then hand-applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before being burnished.

Authentic period pieces often show light oxidisation on the original glass, subtle wear revealing the red or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf, and traditional wood backings secured with square-headed nails.

Positioning a gilt mirror above a fireplace or console table provides a focal point in contemporary or traditional spaces. Combining ornate gilded frames with minimalist modern furniture creates an intentional, curated contrast.

Dust gilt frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster. Avoid water, commercial sprays, or liquid cleaning agents, as moisture can dissolve water gilding and loosen delicate gesso ornaments.
