Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Convex mirrors gained widespread popularity in Britain during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Designed with curved glass to reflect entire rooms, they served both decorative and functional purposes by increasing natural light levels in interior spaces before electric lighting existed.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples were typically constructed from carved pine or plaster gesso applied over timber, which was then gilded using gold leaf. The inner frame often featured an ebonised, reeded wooden slip to contrast against the polished glass mirror plate.

Look for genuine signs of age such as natural oxidation, subtle cracking in the gesso surface known as craquelure, and wear to the gold leaf revealing the red or grey bole beneath. The reverse should show original backboards with hand-sawn timber or old fixing points.

Positioning a convex mirror opposite a window maximizes light distribution across a room. They function exceptionally well as focal points positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, over a hall console table, or within a gallery wall arrangement.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth without applying water or chemical sprays, which dissolve gold leaf and gesso. Clean the convex glass carefully using a lightly dampened cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the gilding.
